Opis produktu

Les Cousins was a folk and blues club in the basement of a restaurant in Greek Street, in London's Soho, which became a home and the epicentre for the folk revival of the mid-1960s, a venue where musicians met and learnt from each other. As such, it was influential in the careers of so many pioneers - Al Stewart, Davey Graham, Bert Jansch, John Renbourn, Sandy Denny, John Martyn, Alexis Korner, Strawbs, Roy Harper, Paul Simon and many others. The club's vital importance to that scene is now commemorated with a triple-CD featuring folk's illuminati from that period, as well as more obscure names who trod the boards in that Greek Street basement, with some tracks gracing CD for the first time. Compiled and annotated by folk historian and fRoots editor/publisher Ian Anderson, who also played at the venue, 'Les Cousins' pays fitting tribute to a unique time and place in UK folk music history.

This is incredible; I first heard about Les Cousins , after finding early Al Stewart interviews. He was compere there, and used to put himself onstage when the audience were sleeping. He even saw Jimi Hendrix there. This CD is tremendously impressive- I know most of the names, if not their material. Al Stewart STILL compares everyone He hears to the Incredible String Band! Jackson C Frank is just incredibly hard to hear; all I know of the Piccadilly Line is that is who CBS Recods wanted to sign, when they got Al Stewart as a bonus. And he did much better. I already knew Donovon's ' Sunny Goodge Street', and am.totally unfamiliar with Dorris Henderson. Was a great fan of Kevin Ayers, Fairport Convention, and Steeleye Span. Bert jansch really was a magic, very humble man- not impressed in the least by Paul Simon, nor Bob Dylan, although Al certainly was influenced by them. The Ian Anderson here is NOT of Jethro Tull fame, but a musician, and folkloric. Roy Harper never turned me on, nor the Watersons, even if they were the inspiration for Wylding Hall., by Elizabeth Hand. I can't recommend this CD enough. This is important, as these clubs no longer exist; not Bunjis, nor the Troubadour. This is important history.

This collection will take you right back to the heart of the rising folk music scene of the 1960s. If you were lucky enough to visit Les Cousins back then, this CD collection will revive great memories. But even if you weren't, it is a chronicle of fantastic music, a look back to some of the early performances of many who were later to become legendary performers. Highly recommended.

It’s a bit expensive, but there’s 3 CDs and a lot of music contained. It bears repeating that these aren’t actual live recordings from Le Cousins, but are studio tracks from albums recorded by artists who performed at Le Cousins, or May have. It’s a great sample of 60s and 70s British folk and blues. Even if you’re a British folk fan, there’s likely material on here you haven’t heard.
