The head features some beautiful, and unique scalation. The scales are rather large and flat. A row of short spikes run along the upper edge of the antorbital fenestrae, and continue until just past the eyes. There is a cluster of very large scales on both sides of the rear of the lower jaw with one massive, round scale on each side of the jaw as well. This is a feature called a subtympanic shield, and as far as I’m aware, it is only found on green iguanas. So it’s a very unusual design choice for a dinosaur! The underside of the lower jaw features some impressive scale detail as well. That’s an area on most figures which is usually a bit neglected, so it’s great to see it so well textured here. The teeth are sculpted nicely, but I’m not a fan of the massive overbite. It’s a shame that the mouth cannot be posed in an open position. Not only do the teeth look better with the mouth open, but the tongue inside is nicely textured too.
The heavy scalation continues down the length of the neck. Most of the scales are medium flat scales. Rows of large, round scales run down either side, and a row of spikes runs from the back of the skull, to the midpoint of the neck. The scales on the throat are small and flat. A small dewlap hangs from the throat as well.
The incredibly dense scalation continues across the entire body and tail. The scales on the body are a bit more rough, leathery, and are less defined in shape. The scales along the belly are the same small, flat scales seen on the throat. Very large, osteoderm-like scales begin just before the hips, and continue back all the way to two thirds of the length of the tail. A row of spikes begins above the shoulder. The spikes run the length of the spine until just past the hips. These spikes transition into a double row of very large quills. These quills run from the tail base, to two thirds of the way down the tail, and then transition back into spikes which taper off towards the tail tip. The large quills, as you will read shortly, play a major part in the action features of this Bistahieversor too!
Being a tyrannosaur, the arms are very short, and have only two fingers on each hand. The scalation is excellent here as well.
The legs are very muscular, and the scale work is crisp. The scales feature a mix of large flat scales, and the smaller, leathery scales seen on the body. Clusters of huge, osteoderm-like scales adorn the upper thighs. The feet are very bird-like. The feet themselves are a bit oversized, but they aren’t terribly large.
I really like the stance of this figure as well. It’s not often we see such a low slung posture. It somehow manages to be both dynamic and neutral at the same time.
Articulations on the Bistahieversor are rather basic. The arms can move forward and back, and can swing outward. The legs can also move forward and back, and can pivot outward a little. The feet can rotate as well. Everything else is tied to the action features.
The action features are what makes this Bistahieversor even more unique. There are two buttons located on either side of the back, and each one performs a different action. The left button causes the head to raise slightly, and then dip down into a bite. The button on the right causes the massive quills on the tail to open and close from a double row, to a single row, and back to a double row. This gives the appearance of the animal shaking its quills to scare off potential threats. When I first saw photos of this figure, I assumed the quills would extend. I’m glad that I was wrong, because the actual feature is much more naturalistic.
Included in with this figure is a piece of tracking gear. This harness fits over the head and neck of the Bistahieversor. The piece is made from a soft plastic, which makes fastening the chin strap a relatively easy task. The harness is packed with excellent detail. There are tubes, screws, leather, metal, panels, and pockets scattered around the piece. There’s even a camera mounted on the left side of the head. I love these pieces of tracking gear. They add a lot of playability, and I wish Mattel would include them alongside more figures.
The coloration on this figure is excellent, as are the paint applications themselves. I love how the dark coloration splits into two, with the white in the middle. I also appreciate that there are multiple colors of paint used here. I particularly love how well the paint is blended on the rear portion, as well as the bright speckling above the hips. The swirling plastic technique is used on the white section, which adds a bit more depth of color. This technique can sometimes look a bit strange, or even bad, but it works brilliantly on this figure. My only nitpick is that I wish the quills had been colored more vibrantly. The quills would have made much more sense as a display feature if they had been.
The Gigantic Trackers Bistahieversor is a fun, and very unique addition to the line. I love that Mattel continues to produce obscure species, and I particularly love when they think outside the box for their action gimmicks. That’s when we see creative figures such as this!
