Side A is not exactly alternative sixties containing Status Quo, The Zombies and Shocking Blue for example .
Side B has one or two more alternative, eg, non commercial records and bands on it, but we still have Over Under Sideways Down The Yard birds, which really isn’t an alternative to anything really.
Side C gets a little further away from the regulation crowd you find on sixties compilations, but at least 4 of the 7 Artists are well known to most people with a knowledge of records of that era.
So we arrive at Side D. Here we find Louise Louise by The Kingmen, not even vaguely alternative. We even have The Easybeats international multi million seller Easy On My Mind.
Having been so critical why the five star rating?
Simple really, the double Album has enough on it to make it well worth the money. Captain Beefheart, The 13th Floor Elevators The Pretty Things ( who did a brilliant session for Marc Riley on Six Music in 2019), The Box Tops (who for once aren’t performing The Letter) and Small Faces performing Afterglow mean the album does go beyond the usual suspects you usually find on these compilations. Finally, and on a personal point of view, absolutely any album that has Sly and the Family Stone on it, is always in with a shout of getting a decent star rating.

Great collection of songs. Some of the mixes sound off, bass getting louder then quieter, mid range prominent. Not enough to spoil the songs but noticeable if you know the songs well. Worth the money.

I spent most of the 60s at less than 10 years of age, and this superb compilation album triggers good memories of many tunes i remember hearing on the radio back then. Not a duff track in the selection, nothing too heavy, and certainly nothing too lame [and their was a lot of lame pop stuff around in the 60s]. The Demon Records vinyl pressings are reasonable albeit with a slight dish warp on one of my LPs so loses a star however this fortunately doesn't cause any noticeable problems or concern when spinning on the turntable, and besides the respectable sonic quality and engaging sound + fab music regains this album a 5 star award from this happy listener : )
