This album is the best piece of music since Holy Mountain by Sleep. The most kickass, heavy, doom toned music you could imagine. Black Sabbath started it and Sleep took it to a new level and no one has come close to them since.
Sleep have one of the most devoted cult audiences in rock, and while Matt Pike's High On Fire helps prevent this legendary stoner/doom band from being criticized for relatively slow album output, "The Sciences" makes Sleep fans miss their absence between albums even more. This album is a lyrical and musical tribute to the metal/doom god Tony Iommi and bassist pal Geezer Butler with the song entitled "Giza Butler". We find our intrepid marijuananauts landing on planet Iommi, splashing down in TH Sea. (Get it?) With tales of Holy hashish, the partaking of ritual bong hits, and the band's trademark ultra heavy stoner vibe, Sleep perhaps celebrate the legalization of grass in their native Oakland, CA. Somehow the Great and Powerful Ozz isn't around, but with the ritual ceremonies dedicated to King Iommi the Sabbath worship is carried out fully. Sonically this is a bit slower paced than "Holy Mountain", and full of long jams that ooze out with the deliberation of a lava lamp, Matt creating feedback and trippy sounds all over the place and playing his usual fine lead work as well. His musical persona in Sleep is different from High On Fire - more deliberate, atmospheric and still powerful as can be. The closing instrumental, "The Botanist" is possibly one of the most psychedelic/doomy tunes Sleep has done. And while fans groove on this long awaited and excellent album, all jokes aside, we can rejoice that it's 4:20 twice each day. Ooops.
