A classic recording by one of the finest international combos of its time - the KennyClarke/Francy Boland big band.
As is typical of these MPS recordings this has excellent sound for the period and has been beautifully remastered for CD. Francy Boland`s arrangements are always interesting and finely crafted; the ensemble work is – as usual – top class; listen to the lush sounds of “You Stepped Out Of A Dream” or the support from the brass section behind Benny Bailey`s flugelhorn solo on “I`m Glad There Is You”. There are examples of Boland`s trademark rhapsodic, harmonised choruses for the exemplary sax section on several numbers, which are - in the main - well-known standards, though on my first listening I wondered how he was going to handle such fare as “By Strauss” and even Sousa`s rather four-square march “High School Cadets” (the answer is “brilliantly”). Featuring a host of great soloists – Jimmy Duchar, Ake Persson, Dave Pike, Tony Coe, Ronnie Scott, Johnny Griffin et al. A terrific line-up from 1968.
The CD has been issued with all the original LP notes and cover art that probably wouldn't be accepted today; do listen to the sound samples above. The album has a playing time of just over 36 minutes.
Well received, seemingly with some delay in the Mail. This is one of the greatest and most innovative Big Bands , and it is a great pity that this type of superb musicianship has disappeared from to-days music scene , which to me is repetitive and un-interesting... I think few Belgians know the name Francy Boland at all, and certainly his work. What a waste !!
