The concept works for just about everybody. Joyce DeDonato gets plenty of time to show us her skills as singer and actor. What a joy to see Flicka again! The backstage antics make for lots of laughs and a few sighs. As a singer myself, I kept saying "I know that person." Verismo opera in the 21st century. The production, the sound, the camera work all worked just fine for me. I'll be teaching this opera next semester.

Das Libretto des Werkes steht nicht für die Shakespeare Romeo und Julia Story, ist keine Geschichte der aufkeimenden Liebe. Wie man auch an bestimmten ausländischen, wie heimischen, negativen Rezensionen sieht, ist die Erwartungshaltung völlig fehlfokussiert. Musiktheater hat auch nicht die schöne Bebilderung zum Ziel, sondern die Umsetzung des Inhalts. Der ist brutal und tragisch.

Zentral geht es um den Gesellschaftskonflikt zwischen zwei konkurrierenden Familien, Ehre, Blut, Rache, Gewalt, Macht. Diese Tradierung von Gewalt will Romeo aufbrechen.
Christof Loy inszeniert mit einer stummen Figur den Tod als allseits präsent, sie zentriert das Stück.
In einer rückblendenden Szenengestaltung wird die Obsession des Vaters auf Julia präsent, die sie auch später beherrscht.
Julia, hin-und hergerissen zwischen Pflicht und Liebesverlangen, zwischen Tradition und Freiheitswillen.
Dieser Kreislauf zwischen Tradition und Aufbegehren endet tragisch, ein für die Bellini Zeit geradezu provozierendes Ende. Eine modifizierende, verfälschende Happy End Fassung beherrschte lange Zeit die Bühnen.
Loy präsentiert mittels eines Drehbühnenkonzepts in modern räumlichem Ambiente die Handlung, beginnend mit der Kindheit Julias.

Olga Kulchynska wunderbar als Julia mit einem berückend mädchenhaften Sopran,

Fabio Luisi dirigiert.

Incredibly good staging, beautifully played by the orchestra conducted by Luisi and fantastically sung and acted by DiDonato and Kulchynska, who are admirably seconded especially by Botnarciuc, but also by Bernheim and Lorenzi. DiDonato is at the acme of her great vocal power and I do not remember ever having seen a female singer so convincingly impersonate a male role as she does Romeo's, the brave, bellicose leader of the Montecchi (in this non-standard version of the Romeo and Juliet story). Kulchynska's voice is quite a match for hers in the duets and she sings her solo arias with great tenderness. I do not relish the enrichment of classical opera with additional characters (so to speak, second order fictions) not in the original libretto. Such was the overextended Dr. Grenvil played in silence by Luigi Roni in Willy Decker's 2005 Salzburg Traviata, and the overgrown Angel of Love played by Uli Kirsch in Claus Guth's 2006 Salzburg Nozze. The androgynous Angel of Death that here accompanies Juliet and Romeo to their bitter end is in good measure an imitation of the latter (to the point of standing on a window sill from which it jumps out, just like its clumsy forerunner), but Gieorgij Puchalski's sheer physical beauty and artful movements more than compensate for the triteness of the idea. The video image and the soundtrack are impeccable. I must complain however that Accentus, a comparatively new CD and BD publisher, follows the regrettable example set by Opus Arte and fails to provide subtitles in the language in which the opera is sung.
Note: Another review has highlighted the clear reference to the famous film The Godfather. It is true that Botnarciuc's make-up is evocative of Brando (minus one foot of stature). However, the analogy falls flat, for Bellini's Capo dei Capuleti utterly lacks the sense of humor that is essential to Don Corleone (and other mafia chieftains in the movies, such as Don Balduccio Sinagra in the Montalbano series).

I enjoyed opening night in Dallas with Justice Ginsberg, who was an opera fan and flew in from DC to see the world premiere.
