This DVD arrived on Monday. Fantastic movie, the battle scenes with all those sailing ships is just spectacular. The story is interesting too. The whole movie is brilliant.
Much of it is in Dutch with English subtitles. It is definitely worth 5 stars, but in my opinion it could have been better if: (i) they had made one of Admiral de Ruyter's daughters just that bit older, given her a meaningful role, and picked a really attractive girl to play the part, (ii) skipped some of the poor / trivializing dialogue and scantily clad women of Charles II. Charles II was a traitor in the pay of Louis XIV and the Dutch Republic faced an existential threat from France. (iii) I found the constant use of The Netherlands irritating. Whatever people in the 17th Century called the country, it certainly wasn't The Netherlands. It shouldn't have been too difficult to research this point and get it right. I don't know for certain, but the United Provinces or the Seven United Provinces or maybe then, as today, Holland, seems to me to be the more likely names in use at the time.
