I bought this book specifically for the chapters about the author's work at Jeep, developing the XJ, TJ and WJ. As something as a Jeep fan, I found the some of the details of the creation and development of these vehicles rather interesting.

Unfortunately, the whole book could have used a lot more proofreading and editing. It seems like the author's thoughts are sometimes not nearly as well organized as they can be. He often adds sentences that really don't add anything, like telling me that I was supposed to find the next paragraph about front suspension of the Jeep Cherokee somehow uninteresting. There is some good content in here, if you go fishing for it. It's just a little too hard find and read.

I suppose that true geniuses don't think like other people but I firmly believe that they also don't need to tell the world every few minutes that they are brilliant beyond all others. Somehow it seems to me that genius is evident all by itself. In this book, it never has a chance. Author Evan Boberg lets you know how bright he is, how clever he is, how inventive he is, how insightful he is and much, much more. Sadly, in some instances he does so by belittling those of his colleagues who worked with him, and in particular, some of the people who supervised him. That's akin to running your boat aground on a rock, then draining the lake, and bragging about how high up your boat is now than all the other boats down on the dry lake bottom. If only once the author had recounted an example of his own humanity, frailty, or failure I might have been more sympathetic. Certainly, recent developments in the domestic auto industry have shown that poor management can bring down the largest corporations and in some way Boberg's analyses in a book published in 2004 could be said to be predictive of the later collapse of the domestic auto industry. Putting this foreshadowing aside for a moment,though, I felt that the greatest difficulty with this book was the tireless self-aggrandizement on the author's part. This is so pervasive that it tends to obscure his very theses and supporting arguments and evidence. I can't imagine having had to work alongside this man and found that the antipathy I felt toward him as I read page after page of me, me, me must have been similar to the reactions his colleagues had to him at work. No wonder nobody paid any attention to his "brilliant" ideas. They couldn't stand his arrogance. His message in this book didn't make it to my gut either. I felt a curiously detatched, intellectual understanding instead of a visceral reaction. Long before I'd read this book I was already convinced that there were countless highly paid idiots employed in the domestic auto industry. This book taught me that there was also a massive ego hidden away in the bowels of Chrysler, where it couldn't do much harm. No, this is not a book I'd recommend.

I bought the book because I was looking for ideas with regard to converting a gasoline powered vehicle to electric power. If this is your purpose, then this book has absolutely no value for you.

On the other hand, if you are simply interested in the grotesque manner in which large corporations lurch along, then you will find this amusing - and possibly even worth while. Having spent a goodly number of years within the corporate world, I can empathize with this man. His main problem, however, is that he did not have the good sense to get out early.
