This CD is a wonderful slice of the cool jazz style of the '50s. Carl Fontana's trombone work is very good, but not quite as smooth as his later recordings like
The Great Fontana
. Never the less, the entire recording cooks and the musicianship is superb.
The only detractor is the quality of the recording. Knowing that it's circa 1955 puts the listeners expectations to a reasonable level, but at times there is a noticeable modulation of the treble. While a bit of a distraction, the musicianship is so outstanding that it more than compensates for this technical flaw.
I would recommend this not only to trombone jazz fans, but to all cool jazz fans.
