A live album comprised of material recorded on tours from 1973, 1974, and 1975, 'Viva!' is a strong, powerful document of Roxy Music at the peak of their live powers, featuring a fine cross-section of their best work. The album was released a few weeks before Bryan Ferry announced that Roxy Music had split up. By 1979 the band no longer existed. In this respect, one could see this record as a farewell work at the time. Bryan Ferry's voice is as energetic as ever and Andy MacKay demonstrates his innate musical wisdom on sax and oboe. Paul Thompson is a absolute power-house on the drums when playing live and does so impressively. Phil Manzanera is out of sight as usual and the classically trained Eddie Jobson brings an imaginative element to the mix with the electric violin and mellotron.

I was not fortunate enough to hear Roxy Music live in the Seventies. This excellent live disc is the next best thing. I found it after seeing Bryan Ferry and his superb band live in Atlanta on August 15, 2019. They played lots of Roxy Music, of course, in addition to some of Ferry's solo material. There were four songs that overlapped with "Viva! Roxy Music" from 1976: Out of the Blue, which is my favorite RM song and one of my favorite songs period, If There Is Something, In Every Dream Home a Heartache, and Do the Strand.
For these live recordings from Glasgow in November 1973, Newcastle in November 1974, and Wembley in October 1975, the lineup was:
Bryan Ferry -- vocals and keyboards Andrew MacKay -- saxophone and oboe Paul Thompson -- drums Phil Manzanera -- guitar Eddie Jobson -- violin, synthesizers and keyboards John Wetton -- bass The Sirens -- background vocals
This band had a powerful, unique, apocalyptic sound. Since I never saw them live in the Seventies I can't say how well "Viva!" captures it, but this is a stunning live recording!
