If you will, think back to the late 70s early 80s, the Danzig era. Arguably he was the best vocalist the Misfits had, and personally, he's one of my favorite vocalists in hard rock and metal...but the fact that I loved Danzig's early Misfit work cant keep me from appreciating this album. "American Psycho" is more of a rock album than a straight forward punk release like "Earth AD." Unfortunately, this album has been misunderstood by fans stuck in the days of old. Therefore, this review will address the new fan, and the old.

The Misfits have never been the most technical group nor the heaviest. But on this album, they sound refreshed, this is arguably Doyle's best guitar work ("Mars Attacks" is so catchy), and Dr. Chud is the best drummer the band ever had. The production is clear and less crunchy than "Static Age" and "Walk Among Us" (take that however you will, personally for me, I like the old Misfits with that static like production, it is almost nostalgic.) The lyrics are based in horror movie classics and Science Fiction movies that would clearly fit on "Walk Among Us." Graves is no Glenn Danzig. Instead, he's something different not as powerful or demanding in the vocal department, but he seems to fit in with the band very nicely. If you are interested in this band I recommend getting "American Psycho" and "Static Age" and compare whichever you like best. Don't throw this album away before you hear it simply because Danzig left.

This was the second album I heard from the Michale Graves era of the misfits, and once again I loved it, the best tracks are american psycho and speak of the devil. This album is considerably heavier than both the danzig era and famous monsters, in fact the verses on the title sound like something off earth ad. The guitars sound heavier, and graves' vocals sound great and melodical, worth the money, its not as good as danzigs stuff, but it's still very good

Comme beaucoup de fans de Metallica, j'ai découvert The Misfits grâce à l'intérêt que portaient les four horsemen à ce groupe et aussi du fait que leur ancien leader n'est autre que Glenn Danzig, qui a depuis fondé son propre groupe de Metal.

Car du Metal, ceci n'en est point. Bon, on peut tout de même parler de "cousin très proche". Ici, on a affaire à une sorte de punk mais difficile de classer ce groupe quelque part. Misfits fait du Misfits, point à la ligne. En fait, ils ont créé leur propre style, le "horror-punk".

"American psycho" sonne la renaissance du groupe après des années de traversée du désert et de batailles juridiques suite au départ de Danzig. Jerry Only et Doyle Wolfgang Van Frankenstein, rescapés du crash, recrutent le chanteur Michael Graves et le batteur Dr Chud et le nouveau line-up publie deux albums : celui-ci, paru en 1997 et "Famous monsters" en 1999.
Je ne vais rentrer dans la polémique qui oppose les partisans du Misfits de Danzig et celui-ci. Chacun son opinion mais force est de reconnaître que cet album est très bon. On s'éloigne un tout petit peu du style initial des Misfits, il est vrai, car le groupe joue sur des ambiances plus punk-rock, aux refrains mémorisables en une écoute ("American psycho", "From hell they came", "Dig up her bones",...) avec des "oh oh oh" un peu partout. Mais les titres sont bien ficelés, bien directs (le plus long dure 3 minutes, ne cherchez pas un solo de gratte, y'en a pas), ils donnent la pêche (comme tout titre punk qui se respecte). On reste par contre bien dans le trip horror-punk avec une intro bien glauque et des textes toujours aussi macabres. Mais de l'horreur à la "Rocky Horror picture show". C'est pour rire !
A noter que le CD contient en fait 18 titres, "Hell night" est bien caché en ghost track.
