This second edition has been updated and substantially expanded. Starting with the description of our home galaxy, the Milky Way, this cogently written textbook introduces the reader to the astronomy of galaxies, their structure, active galactic nuclei, evolution and large scale distribution in the Universe. After an extensive and thorough introduction to modern observational and theoretical cosmology, the focus turns to the formation of structures and astronomical objects in the early Universe. The basics of classical astronomy and stellar astrophysics needed for extragalactic astronomy are provided in the appendix.

While this book has grown out of introductory university courses on astronomy and astrophysics and includes a set of problems and solutions, it will not only benefit undergraduate students and lecturers; thanks to the comprehensive coverage of the field, even graduate students and researchers specializing in related fields will appreciate it as a valuable reference work.

Opis produktu

Recenzja

“Extragalactic Astronomy and Cosmology is a textbook about what and how we know or hypothesise about the Universe and our Galaxy. The book starts out with a short overview of all the strange and wonderful astronomical objects and cosmological ideas that we face in modern science. I enjoyed most the depth and abundance of details provided in the book.” (AstroMadness.com, May, 2017)

“An obvious difference from many other roughly similar books is the large number of illustrations, many in colour. … I recommend the book both to students and to those who work in fields other than those covered by the book … . It is up to date, quite detailed for an introduction, and the numerous figures with references are particularly useful as jumping-off points to the original literature.” (Phillip Helbig, The Observatory, April, 2016)

Opis z tylnej okładki książki

Accounting for the astonishing developments in the field of Extragalactic Astronomy and Cosmology, this second edition has been updated and substantially expanded.

The new edition incorporates some of the most spectacular results from new observatories like the Galaxy Evolution Explorer, Herschel, ALMA, WMAP and Planck, as well as new instruments and multi-wavelength campaigns which have expanded our understanding of the Universe and the objects populating it. This includes new views on the galaxy population in the nearby Universe, on elliptical galaxies, as well as a deeper view of the distant Universe approaching the dark ages, and an unprecedented view of the distant dusty Universe. Schneider also discusses the impressive support for the standard model of the Universe, which has been substantially strengthened by recent results, including baryon acoustic oscillations (an approach which has significantly matured over the years), results from the completed WMAP mission and from the first Planck results, which have confirmed and greatly improved on these findings, not least by measuring the gravitational lensing effect on the microwave background. Further, a new chapter focusing on galaxy evolution illustrates how well the observations of distant galaxies and their central supermassive black holes can be understood in a general framework of theoretical ideas, models, and numerical simulations.

Peter Schneider’s Extragalactic Astronomy and Cosmology offers fundamental information on this fascinating subfield of astronomy, while leading readers to the forefront of astronomical research. But it seeks to accomplish this not only with extensive textual information and insights; the author’s own passion for exploring the workings of the Universe, which can be seen in the text and the many supporting color illustrations, will further inspire the reader.

From the reviews of the first edition:

"...Masterful blending of observation and theory; lucid exposition... (D. E. Hogg, CHOICE, Vol. 44 (10), June, 2007)"

"Through the richness of the color illustrations and through the deep insight of the content, the book will most certainly lead the reader to the forefront of astronomical research in this very interesting and fascinating domain of astronomy. … will not only be highly appreciated by undergraduate students in astronomy but also by graduate students and researchers involved in the field who will certainly appreciate its comprehensive coverage. (Emile Biémont, Physicalia Magazine, Vol. 29 (4), 2007)"

5,0 z 5 gwiazdek Broad, deep, and very readable
Opinia napisana we Francji dnia 23 maja 2022
This is the best book on cosmology that I know of. It gives the latest theories, explained very well even for nonexperts, and it also presents the mathematics, carefully done to be as readable as possible and to eliminate all irrelevant complexities. Highly recommended to any intelligent person who wants to go further than popular science! I would assume that even experts would find it refreshing reading (I am not an expert on cosmology, but I do publish scientific articles in other areas).

What a superb book.

After studying Cosmology and General Relativity personally for a few years (and buying all the classics books : Misner, Thorne, Wheeler, Wald, Hobson et al. (excellent!), Carroll and Ostlie; Weinberg; Schutz etc. I found this.
What an amazing book!! It was written for University students to be a comprehensive source on the theory and observational aspects of Galaxies and Cosmology. It’s such a wonderfully rich resource!!
I found that all the above classical texts didn’t really give a ‘feel’ for the observational side, whilst the standard observational cosmology books are too woolly .
I am more of a theorist and love the theoretical approach, but without a full understanding of the observational side there will always be something lacking in the modelling. So I was delighted to find this.
I’d say all undergraduates, graduated and amateurs would find this text incredibly useful.
As for which format. Choose the paperback. It’s well made and will last a long time. It is a shame people are downgrading their view of the book just because of the binding on the hardback. (I urge those reviews to change their review score!!)
If I could have given it 6 stars I would.

5,0 z 5 gwiazdek 5 stars for content, 0 stars for the binding
Opinia napisana w Kanadzie dnia 14 października 2017
I just received my copy (Oct 13/2017) having ordered it assuming that the concerns others have raised in past years about poor binding would have long since been resolved. Sadly the copy I received has the same issues. The book opens unnaturally flat because the pages are barely held in place and so the binding offers almost no resistance to opening wider than any similar sized book would. You immediately get the sense that as long as you don't open it, the pages will be fine, if you get my meaning.

It's ironic though because otherwise, the production seems almost lavish for an advanced physics textbook. Nearly every page has a diagram, graph or full colour drawing/photo, and the pages have a decent heft especially when compared to many texts these days which are printed on paper so thin you can see through them. The book is physically quite large and heavy with every page dense with text, equations and graphics. Content-wise, the amount of information on display here is astounding, and based on going through the first chapter, the writing seems exceptionally clear. It's easy to imagine this book was a labour of love by the author.

So in spite of the binding concerns, I'm giving this book 5 stars based on the content.

Absolutely outstanding!! The amount of information is unbelievable. It's hard to imagine how Schneider was able to encompass such a large volume of material and explain the vast breadth of astronomy in such a clear, but precise and detailed manner.
