O autorze

Otfried Preußler wurde am 20. Oktober 1923 im nordböhmischen Reichenberg geboren. Nach dem Krieg und fünf Jahren in sowjetischer Gefangenschaft, kam er 1949 nach Oberbayern. Bevor er sich ganz der Schriftstellerei zuwandte, arbeitete er als Lehrer an einer Volksschule. "Der kleine Wassermann", sein erstes Kinderbuch, wurde 1956 veröffentlicht. Otfried Preußler hat über 35 Bücher geschrieben, die in mehr als 50 Sprachen übersetzt wurden und für die er viele Auszeichnungen erhalten hat. Die weltweite Gesamtauflage seiner Bücher beträgt rund 50 Millionen Exemplare. Otfried Preußler starb am 18. Februar 2013.

Winnie Gebhardt wurde 1929 in Stuttgart geboren. Schon in ihrer Schulzeit zeichnete sie oft zum jeweiligen Thema an den Rand ihrer Schulhefte. Als der Krieg begann, war sie zehn Jahre alt. Mit 16 Jahren, die Schulen waren seit mehr als einem Jahr geschlossen, stand sie in den Ruinen Stuttgarts - an Ausbildung war vorerst nicht zu denken. Nach Ende des Krieges und der Nachkriegszeit machte sie ihr Abitur nach. Später bewarb sie sich an der Akademie der Bildenden Künste Stuttgart und wurde aufgenommen. Sie studierte fünf Jahre Graphik, Malerei und Lithographie. Der Zufall verschaffte ihr die ersten Aufträge als Illustratorin: Über Bekannte lernte die frisch gebackene Studienabgängerin Lotte Weitbrecht kennen, die bald Michael Ende entdecken würde. „‘Fräulein Weitbrecht‘, wie man damals noch sagte, zeigte mir das eben eingetroffene Manuskript vom Wassermann und bat mich um Probezeichnungen und einen Umschlagentwurf.“ Wenig später illustrierte Winnie Gebhardt auch „Die kleine Hexe“ und schuf eine charakteristische Umschlaggestaltung, an der der Verlag seither nichts verändert hat. Sie illustrierte viele weitere erzählende Kinderbücher für den Thienemann Verlag, schuf sich aber auch bei Schulbuch-Verlagen einen Namen, bei denen sie Fibeln gestaltete. Neben ihrer Tätigkeit als Illustratorin entwarf sie für ein englisches Lebensmittel-Unternehmen Plakate für Pudding und Marmelade. Später arbeitete sie regelmäßig für eine Kinderzeitschrift, mitunter entwarf sie Spiele. Winnie Gebhardt starb am 27. August 2014 im Alter von 85 Jahren.

I read this story when I was a little girl in the original German. I always wished for my granddaughters to be able to read this wonderful little story of learning and not giving up. This book is in English and was written for German children who are learning English. Some of the words are in italics and have their German meaning at the end of the chapter. But it will do great for any American child who wants to read the story, and they can learn a little German at the same time. I was very happy to find this version and can't wait for my granddaughters to read it. : )

This was a lovely book to read.

This is the story of `The Little Witch' - she's 127 years old (which is quite young for a Witch we are told!) but she's got problems; she's been told by the Witch Sisterhood that she's a bad Witch and must be much better if she's to join the Coven and midnight celebrations. The problem is; she thinks being a bad Witch is doing bad spells and stuff, and so you guessed it; she starts to be a `good' Witch thinking she's much better!

There are several adventures broken up into sections telling of various delightful and enchanting stories of how she helps people - all very different and interesting.

This is a really lovely book with lots of pictures/illustrations in the style of simple drawings. They're very clear and detailed, and I love the picture on page 59 which is my favourite - I did not think a simple drawing could be so vibrant! In many ways, this book is quite unique.

I love story-book Witches, and although this goes against type, (I normally prefer the traditional `wicked' story-book type Witch) this role-reversal did not diminish my enjoyment of the novel.

A very good read with delightful cover artwork.
