In an environment where the online social networks are getting bigger and bigger and we tend to put our efforts into developing these networks, this book is a reminder that the baseline of business relations development will remain the one to one interaction.
More than reminding us, the author goes on into decoding this interaction into very practical advice on personal appearance, self-confidence, how to lead a conversation and a meeting.
It is a practical book with valuable information on topics that many of us take for granted and don't always pay the necessary attention to.

It is a fallacy to believe that valuable contacts can be created and maintained via LinkedIn, Xing or other social networks. It is also wrong to assume that 500 followers or 1000 contacts on LinkedIn are the key to success. It is your actual rather than digital presence that determines your professional path. Taking the leap into the boardroom will be expedited by your personal appearance, appreciation towards others, your ability to serve as a role model as well as plenty of sufficient self-confidence.Unfortunately, aspects like cultivating a charismatic demeanor, conducting small talk and the rules of etiquette required for a professional environment are not typically taught at school or even during university studies. The art of getting involved in a conversation, successfully leading a meeting, or even the simple yet necessary rules used to conduct business lunches are also not taught at school. Nevertheless, this is exactly what determines how you are perceived and spoken about and will ultimately influence your next steps on the career ladder.ONE OF THE MOST IMPORTANT THINGS IS HOW PEOPLE TALK ABOUT YOU WHEN YOU ARE NOT IN THE ROOM.

Worth to read

I generally never read guides, but I chose “Code of Commerce” with curiosity. It’s a small book, actually a pocket guide, easy and quick to read.
The book is divided into a few chapters, and each of them – into more, short mini-chapters. From reading we can get to know how to make a good first impression during business meetings, how to build good business relations, how to make meaningful meetings and phone conferences, how to behave during business dinners and travels… The whole knowledge in a nutshell, collected by the author during his years of experience in international companies. All written in easy and approachable language – I was worried that the book about business etiquette might be written with lots of advanced English vocabulary which I don’t use on daily basis, which luckily didn’t happen. There are many interesting facts about human behaviours in various business situations – some comments may seem to be obvious, other may be a surprise for the reader. In the book we may find also little images of like cartoon characters in various situations.
I wouldn’t actually mind if the book was longer. I know that it was to be “information in the nutshell”, but I’m sure most of the topics could be expanded. I also paid attention to lack of any footnotes or bibliography. I’m aware that the book was based on author’s own experiences and not on other business books (though it could be interesting too), but there are quite often some numbers, percentages, statistics… And there is no reference to them. I doubt that the author himself was doing a research which resulted in saying that 1.3 billion people use cutlery and 2.6 billion people use chopsticks. That data must be taken from somewhere and I miss the source in here. Not to mention that there are statistical data and there is no information (at least in footnotes) how the data were collected, analysed, what was a representative group… Those numbers must have come from somewhere.
I think it’s worth to buy “Code of commerce”, it’s the quick to read and full of practical information book. It helps to remind and organize in your head many obvious, but often forgotten information about business relations. If more people based on those rules at work, it would be much easier for all of us to work together :)
