A la fin du xviie siècle, un jeune lord est enlevé sur ordre du roi et atrocement défiguré, la bouche fendue jusqu'aux oreilles. Abandonné une nuit d'hiver, il parvient à rejoindre la cahute d'un philosophe ambulant, et devient saltimbanque. Quinze ans plus tard, rétabli dans ses droits, il est pair d'Angleterre. Mais sa mutilation ne s'effacera pas, et celui qui se serait voulu prophète à la chambre des lords restera condamné à n'être qu'un bouffon. Lorsqu'il publie le livre en 1869, Hugo le présente comme le roman de l'aristocratie, premier volume d'une trilogie consacrée à une Histoire de la Révolution que Quatrevingt-Treize achèverait. Et ce livre sombre dénonce bien en effet le despotisme de l'aristocratie. Mais si L'Homme qui rit est une méditation historique et métaphysique, c'est aussi une oeuvre foisonnante et baroque, une manière de drame qui réclame un « lecteur pensif », puisque Hugo nous donne à réfléchir sur la misère et sur le peuple, sur l'amour et sur le désir, aussi bien que sur le Mal.

first time I read in French. Excellent, easy to understand and translate, with an occasional look at the dictionary. Victor Hugo is Victor Hugo, he has to repeat things several times, but that is the way he is, even in poetry. There are a lot of repetitions here, but after a whiie one get used to it. And the narration is excellent. I had seen the movie 85 years ago, and it was good, but not as good as the book.

George Saintsbury called L'Homme qui rit "the maddest book in recognized literature", and an open-minded reader can't help but be amazed that a book so bombastic, digressive, self-indulgent can still ensorcel (a word I think Hugo would have liked).

Hugo's deathless literary reputation is anchored in his poetry, which you arguably have to be Francophone to appreciate. His novels are his minor work, but in my humble opinion they're great reads. The element of the irrational is as startling as it is in the best of Dostoevsky. Imaginary vistas and stylized characters bordering on the ridiculous abound, as if the poet is allowing the novelist to ignore reality to reach higher ground. One wonders what Hugo would have made of Rimbaud and, even more intriguing, Celine, a novelist who, as Gide said, offered the reader hallucinations provoked by the real world in the poetry of slang and argot.

Hugo shouldn't be compared with the other great 19th century French novelists, because he's not on the same beam. Stendhal thought he exaggerated, Flaubert found him coarse at his worst, and while Balzac and Proust have good words for him, it's clear they didn't consider him part of their "tradition".

Les Miserables is the best known of Hugo's novels, but far from the best (though it's well worth the effort of reading without skipping any of the 1300 pages). Along with the book under review, you should try Les Travailleurs de la Mer and Quatrevingt-Triezieme (sp?) before you attempt Les Mis. Then you'll understand why his most famous novel is only the tip of the iceberg.
