The Royal Navy's Air Service in the Great War Twarda oprawa – 19 września 2017

4,7 4,7 z 5 gwiazdek Liczba ocen: 21

In a few short years after 1914, the Royal Navy practically invented naval air warfare, not only producing the first effective aircraft carriers, but also pioneering most of the techniques and tactics that made naval air power a reality.

Following two previously well-received histories of British naval aviation, David Hobbs turns his attention to the operational and technical achievements of the Royal Naval Air Service, both at sea and ashore, from 1914 to 1918. Detailed explanations of operations, the technology that underpinned them and the people who carried them out bring into sharp focus a revolutionary period of development that changed naval warfare forever.

Recenzja

This is a fine book, a ripping yarn and essential reading for anyone interested in air and sea power. As the RNAS and its gallant members have passed from living memory, this book is a worthy tribute to their memory.--Australian Naval Institute

It is a good history on the RNAS, not exciting, but one shouldn't expect to read like an adventure novel. there are many period photos to illustrate the subjects the author is covering. All in all the best comprehensive coverage of this organization I have come across.

A very well researched book from a highly respected author.

It is not quite a 'prequel' to Hobbs' works on carriers, as it is much more broadly-based, attempting to tell the history of naval aviation from the early years of flight. It covers lighter-than-air developments in naval aviation, and not just the airships, (e.g. from kite balloons for ranging monitors in the Mediterranean to the early stages of kite balloons being deployed in u-boat hunting).

It's quite comprehensive in depth and in scope, e.g. training and equipment are also addressed, and the specific challenges faced by naval aviation. I was quite pleased to read a book on the RNAS that doesn't just "play the hits" such as the Black Flight and the air war on the Western Front.

The author combines good detail with a readable style. Among other things, I hadn't been aware that by the end of the war Naval Air Service had started to use dipping hydrophones from airships to detect submarines, and that just before the armistice they had prepared a torpedo strike on the German High Seas Fleet.
A reasonable amount of technical detail but more focus on people and ideas. If you are interested in the period, well worth reading.
