O autorze

Lucy Kellaway is an English writer and teacher. For over twenty years, she was an observer of the peculiarities of corporate culture in her column for the Financial Times, before retraining as a teacher. She is a co-founder of the educational charity Now Teach and lives in London.

Incidentally, I never write book reviews. But the audacity of the title versus the limited value compelled me to do so.

I bought this book, frankly, because I thought I would get insights into re-inventing oneself post the age of 50. That's certainly a relevant topic. But I was massively disappointed. This book will find its way to the recycle bin as soon as this review is done.

If you're interested in reading the memoirs of a woman that is confused, type A, doesn't have much to say really, and doesn't have any insightful answers, but rather many questions, and confused notions, then this book is fine for you.

Not to mention the price relative to value delivered is completely skewed towards price. There's little of actual value in terms of insights, or valuable life advice.

The first 100 pages and that's where I started flipping through the rest of the book, are basically a rambling account of her life. Which frankly is not very different or special than that of most people that are suffering a mid life crisis. Obsessed with property, she uproots her family multiple times. Obsessed with stuff, she can't wait to throw away her husband's possessions, surreptitiously.

If you're looking for advice... skip this book. It has hardly any. It's basically the memoirs of a woman that happens to be a FT journalist, that decides to become a teacher, using her connections to find funding.

It's basically a monotonous, rambling, memoir of a woman that would do well to seek answers first - meditation, travel, mindfulness, breathing, self observation, introspection I suspect would do her wonders.

The book is better than the title. A lot of insights into teaching to a different segment of society. A lot of self-discovery and thoughtful insights.
