Opcje zakupu i dodatki
In his first and only official autobiography, music icon Elton John reveals the truth about his extraordinary life. Me is the joyously funny, honest and moving story of the most enduringly successful singer/songwriter of all time.
The Sunday Times bestseller with a new chapter bringing the story up to date.
'The rock memoir of the decade' – Daily Mail
'The rock star's gloriously entertaining and candid memoir is a gift to the reader' – Sunday Times
______________
Christened Reginald Dwight was a shy boy with Buddy Holly glasses who grew up in the London suburb of Pinner and dreamed of becoming a pop star. By the age of twenty-three, he was performing his first gig in America, facing an astonished audience in his bright yellow dungarees, a star-spangled T-shirt and boots with wings. Elton John had arrived and the music world would never be the same again.
His life has been full of drama, from the early rejection of his work with songwriting partner Bernie Taupin to spinning out of control as a chart-topping superstar; from half-heartedly trying to drown himself in his LA swimming pool to disco-dancing with the Queen; from friendships with John Lennon, Freddie Mercury and George Michael to setting up his AIDS Foundation. All the while, Elton was hiding a drug addiction that would grip him for over a decade.
In Me Elton also writes powerfully about getting clean and changing his life, about finding love with David Furnish and becoming a father. In a voice that is warm, humble and open, this is Elton on his music and his relationships, his passions and his mistakes. This is a story that will stay with you, by a living legend.

I have hardly read any books on Music or Musicians…though I have a more than passing interest in Music . The only book I read before was ‘Across the Universe’ by Ajay Bose which covered the Beatles’ disastrous trip to Rishikesh to discover their soul, spirituality and sense thru Mahesh Yogi.
Elton John always fascinated me. Other than his outstanding writing , composing and singing talent ( sorry McCartney and Lennon fans), his life was an open book and the many diverse charities that he founded and funded, always was an inspiration. I realized that there is more to this legend who has been on top of his game for almost half a century unlike his counterparts who just enjoy a brief incandescence with fame….other than the stories of his drug and alcohol addition and his sexuality.
At 70 plus ( compared to as lot of other legends of Rock, he had a career spanning almost 5 decades1) and still partly active and having achieved all that can be achieved in multiple lifetimes, Elton John takes an indulgent look at his life’s journey and bares it all in his trademark deprecatory way.. The original Reginald Dwight, from a council house on Pinner Road, backed by a God gifted talent which was honed later ( he is a certified trained Piano player) to the stratospheric levels of success and fame, schmoozing with Royalty ( every knows of his friendship with Princess Diana but he was pally with the rest of the royalty with the Queen mother visiting his home) and the rich and mighty in the world of music, Hollywood and politics is an interesting read.
Sir Elton ( Yes…he was Knighted too) bares it all….his uneasy relationship with his parents, discovering his sexuality, picking up men and not always succeeding, his days on coke and alcohol, his coming clean ( for more than 35 years now), his shopping disorders, fatherhood now…..and a slightly more relaxed life bringing up his 2 children and a steady life with David Furnish, his partner.
Elton John is a winner in many ways…..while coke and alcohol finished the lives of many great talented musicians ( think Elvis, Whitney Houston, Michael Jackson, David Bowie et al), he fought back, came out clean and also spreads the message. His support for charities eradicating AIDS have raised more than half a billion dollars in the last 10-15 years…don’t think any other musician comes close to his contribution to charity.
The book is also a story of the evolution of Pop and Rock Music. So every famous musician, makes an appearance whom he has encountered during his long and distinguished career makes an appearance in the book…be it Lennon, Dylan, Springsteen, Billy Joel, Tina Turner…and many more who defined the Rock industry for the last 50 years..and the nuggets are interesting and well worth recollecting.
Amongst the legends, he is one of the few who stayed clear of politics most of the time….be it Vietnam or Communism unlike Lennon, Cat Stevens, Springsteen and Dylan…who dabbled it in and also let it influence their music…his music, mostly folksy and simple and straight from the heart…of love, longing and the heart breaks that follow.
I wish there was more in the book on the music making process and greater detail on at least the most memorable songs of his ( though the Diana version of ‘Candle in the Wind’ is discussed in detail)…..but possibly there is a reason….he doesn’t take his greatness seriously and wanted to tell us a simple story…of a suburban lower middle class British boy who did well ( make it exceedingly well please!) ….and his eventful and tumultuous journey….and the joys and heartaches that accompanied it. The book is more on Sir Elton the person…than the entertainment legend he was( or is ?).
You do not need to be interested in music to enjoy this book….go for it….it will tell you that talent when honed well…and where it takes you…will rate it in the same league as two other sportsmen’s autobiographies that I thoroughly enjoyed…in terms of the candor and honesty that went into the writing…Open by Andre Agassi and No Spin by Sharne Warne.
