O autorze

Count Lev (Leo) Nikolaevich Tolstoy was born at Vasnaya Polyana in the Russian province of Tula in 1828. He inherited the family title aged nineteen, quit university and after a period of the kind of dissolute aristocratic life so convincingly portrayed in his later novels, joined the army, where he started to write. Travels in Europe opened him to western ideas, and he returned to his family estates to live as a benign landowner. In 1862 he married Sofia Behr, who bore him thirteen children. He expressed his increasingly subversive, but devout, views through prolific work that culminated in the immortal novels of his middle years, War and Peace and Anna Karenina. Beloved in Russia and with a worldwide following, but feared by the Tsarist state and excommunicated by the Russian Orthodox church, he died in 1910.

The font is meant to be small and the paper like this because this is how books from 100 years ago looked and felt like. They are meant to be kept for years in a library collection. I love this collection, have a lot and hope they keep making them despite the criticisms.
If you want something that you will give or toss away by a paperback.
I’m not a fan of the translation but it’s hard to find one that was more true to the original text because of modern people complaining it’s too hard to read so they butcher it and fill it with modern phrases that are more palatable for the average reader.
The thing that bothers me most about complaining is that just to sell books these days they have to bastardize and butcher the whole work till it’s finally unrecognizable from it’s true greatness. Then people complain about how boring or blaa the book was and they don’t understand why it’s a amazing classic.
If this happens, I suggest you find a copy from 1950 before publishers catered to the average reader and learn why classics are just that. They are amazing when read in the right translation so you get the full depth of what the book truly is about.

A great "little" big novel of family life, trials, and tribulations, and the "perils" of awakening to desire of the main protagonist, Anna, who is married to a steadfast, albeit "boring" man. A great read that's beautifully written, but the print of this edition requires better reading glasses. Don't be fooled by the "look at the pages" option. Had read the paperback version and wanted something that wouldn't yellow. This edition won't. It's nicely printed, if compact small print is to your liking.

I should have checked the dimensions. This book is tiny (shorter than a standard paperback even). It’s very pretty but not practical to read or display on a bookshelf. I won’t be keeping it.

This book of course deserves its reputation. It is a fantastic piece of literature.

The binding itself is quite well done and something of a work of art. However it is very small and consequently the volume has a very thick and the print quite small. It’s hard to hold such a compact thick book for the hours needed to read it and anyone over 40 will definitely have to pull out their reading glasses.
