This is the second edition of our highly acclaimed first one. This edition is almost three times as large, with lot more opportunities to practice what is learned, and with more in-depth explanation of concepts and nuances involved. This edition is presented as a Programmed Text to make sure that the student grasps the idea before going ahead with a poorly understood concept or entity.

It is OK, but not really for me. The persons for whom this book is written are ethnic Indians (particularly Northern, e.g, non-Tamil ones) living in USA (but especially UK), who have never studied Devanagari script before but are familiar with Dharmic religion concepts and history. Why do I say this? It is obvious and will spare you the details.
I studied Devanagari 43 years ago as part of my courses at university in Sanskrit and Hindi. I wanted a refresher for writing. I speak with a Canadian accent. I am familiar with a moderate amount of South Asian cultural contexts having visited India and Nepal many times.
For me this book is not ideal. It isn't bad either. It is good, but certainly not great. After going through it, I will instead buy a standard academic introductory textbook. I prefer to jump right in. Shah's book is not a total waste of money. I just find myself stopping at various points with pronunciation variations (e.g. 'bath') and don't enjoy the 'programmed text' approach. Never even heard of that concept. I find it artificial.

...se non altro è simpatico

affacciarsi ad un altro alfabeto non è semplice ma -per ora- sembra che l'autore sappia farlo con perizia e con grandissima simpatia.
per ora è presto per dire se ho imparato, ma lo consiglio.
Tornerò in argomento appena l'ho terminato
