Does everyone who lives long enough develop dementia?Aging is as natural as leaves changing color at summer's end. We may be powerless when it comes to maturing with health and grace. Tending to good health throughout life results in aging with dignity. In Autumn Leaves, Dr. Steven Rubin, a psychiatrist specializing in geriatric medicine, offers common sense insights into the biological and psychological changes that confront us all, beginning in the middle years and progressing through late life, a stage which the author has termed "gerolescence."Who gets dementia, who doesn't and why? Autumn Leaves not only addresses intellectual, emotional, and behavioral declines, but also provides a framework for evaluating, correctly diagnosing, and treating them, with and without medications. You'll learn how to approach and manage the losses, challenges, and opportunities that accompany the aging process.Autumn Leaves asks and answers the crucial question,"How do you want to live your remaining seasons?"

Book Praise

What a nice piece of writing! This book deserves close reading by a wide audience. Using the tree metaphor as the central image of the human nervous system, Rubin argues for the interconnectedness between mind/brain and nature, positing that consciousness, especially in geriatrics, is profoundly dependent on the health of the system. This book draws and pulls, like good books will. It is, to use an overworked phrase, a gentle reminder and frankly should be required reading in the medical and psychological disciplines, not just by the general reading public. This is not a dry text; instead, it amounts, by implication, to a "how to live" book as it is filled with poetic nuance, broad understanding and wise direction. Rubin has produced a grounding book where the reader feels comfortably repositioned into a comprehensive biologic, naturalistic metaphor; it works as a literary antidote to man's presumed separation from the environment by reseating him as part of a much larger network of plant and animal life. The book brings home the reminder that consciousness is actually fragile, rooted in biology, limited by genetics, requiring careful living but ultimately consequenced by our own doing. Chapter one sets the framework and locks the reader in. This is a very good read.
