Dave Smallshire is an ecologist, lecturer and wildlife tour guide, and plays an active role in the British Dragonfly Society. He formerly worked as an environmental adviser to the UK government and is the coauthor of the highly acclaimed Britain's Dragonflies (Princeton WILDGuides). Twitter @smallshire Andy Swash is managing director of WILDGuides and a well-known wildlife photographer and author. He is the coauthor of Britain's Dragonflies and seven other Princeton WILDGuides books, and has written and edited many other titles.

I was looking for a dragonfly guide and I decided to go for this one, since I do not plan to capture animals, just to ID them in flight or while resting; therefore, I thought I wouldn't need too many small particulars to key out every small anatomical aspect, rather a greater number of real-life photos to get the general appearance and the different morphological variations. The downside is that there is little in the guide about life cycle and larvae, but other guides do not have all the images that this one has. These are quite different approaches, so that depends on what you plan to do.
I think this guide would be perfect for both those approaching the subject and those who already have a general knowledge of it. The only thing I would add is a key to the major groups, to help throughout the first step of identification; then you can easily ID the species combining photos and keys present for each group. It would be interesting to compare a guide with a different approach if I had the chance; anyway, this is a beautiful guide and I am very satisfied so far.
