This book dates from immediately after professional photography shifted from analog to digital, when online tools like PhotoShop had just been introduced. The book, both highly technical and highly theoretical, is a wonderful archive of thoughts on the art and aesthetics of photography and a prescient look into the future of digital. Written before the advent of cameraphones and the iPhone, it misses out on the proletarianization of the art form, but it does provide a thoughtful framework on what the introduction of digital (and digitized) imagery means to the art of photography and the changing culture in which its status has evolved.
Teaching a college BFA photo class, bought this as research. Really excellent book. Despite being an old book from a tech standpoint, the philosophical issues he raises are still quite relevant and interesting.
