A personal story of the ways in which persistence, chance, and creativity interact in biomedical research.

This first book by the author of Zen and the Brain examines the role of chance in the creative process. James Austin tells a personal story of the ways in which persistence, chance, and creativity interact in biomedical research; the conclusions he reaches shed light on the creative process in any field. Austin shows how, in his own investigations, unpredictable events shaped the outcome of his research and brought about novel results. He then goes beyond this story of serendipity to propose a new classification of the varieties of chance, drawing on his own research and examples from the history of science—including the famous accidents that led Fleming to the discovery of penicillin. Finally, he explores the nature of the creative process, considering not only the environmental and neurophysiological correlates of creativity but also the role of intuition in both scientific discoveries and spiritual quests. This updated MIT Press paperback edition includes a new introduction and recent material on medical research, creativity, and spirituality.

5,0 z 5 gwiazdek James H. Austin is a neuroscientific prodigy
Opinia napisana w Stanach Zjednoczonych dnia 19 maja 2013
The first book I read by Austin is _Zen and the Brain_. Please see my Amazon review of that book for further information. Reading that book made me want to read everything and anything written by this neuroscientist of monumental intellect and accomplishment. Fair warning, though. I have an undergraduate degree in neuroscience and I have a hard time absorbing a lot of the more complex concepts in his writing. The lay person with no education in neuroscience is going to miss a great deal of the meaning of any of Austin's books. But I still encourage you to at least give it a go. There's so much there that even absorbing 25% of what he writes about is an edifying experience and makes his books worth the read. His great humility, in the face of his obvious towering intellect and accomplishment is so refreshing. Nobody likes arrogance, yet Austin would be more justified than most in displaying that characteristic. But he is as modest and humble as anyone you could ask for. One gets the impression he would be a pleasant man to meet in person. Speaking for myself, I will eagerly read anything he writes, for as long as he continues to live.

5,0 z 5 gwiazdek An Interesting Work Looking at the Creative Process

This is an engaging read, by a fine author, looking at the creative process and the aspects which shape it, some of which can be influenced and others which cannot. It contains many interesting anecdotes both from the science field in general and the authors own life. Recommended both to students and scientists looking to engage in research and to anyone interested in the creative process.

4,0 z 5 gwiazdek Densely informative, requires focus and adds insight into the creative mind
Opinia napisana w Stanach Zjednoczonych dnia 7 października 2023
I'm a creative by birth.
Both of my parents are also creatives and work in the arts.
Public school did a number on my drive to write and sing.
I was told by more than one 'teacher' (i.e., dream killer) that I was an awful writer (while in middle school)
and an even worse musician and singer (while in elementary school).
Now, in adulthood, I'm seeking guidance and insight into how I can once again tap into my creative genes.
The Lucky Art of Novelty is a look into the main elements in one's life that often lead to successful creative endeavors, be it in the sciences or otherwise. It examines traits and characteristics of naturally creative personalities from a young age and up.
I will end up reading this book twice.
The first read was to gather the low-hanging fruits of wisdom on the subject. The next read will be for highlighting, note-taking, and to more fully digest/compare/contrast the material.
From what I've gathered, the author is Buddhist so I'm assimilating the dense information with diligent comparison to my own values and beliefs (not Buddhist).
