300,000 Kisses a compendium of Ancient LGBTQ+ stories, poems and fragments is bracingly and engagingly translated by Sean Hewitt. In it are tales of ancient stories embellished with handsome, and captivating drawings that manage to evoke the past with an entirely contemporary aesthetic. Illustrator Luke Edward Hall's work is a terrific accomplishment that enlivens every page. Those reasons would be enough to add this telling of familiar and unfamiliar myths to your library.

The real value of 300K is the reinsertion or restoration of what we now call Queerness but Ancients saw as a natural expressions of love, desire and passion. Queerness that was edited out and excised by Christian bigots and monks. It is refreshing and restorative (in both senses) and goes far to correct attempts to erase the letters LGBTQ from the ancient literary alphabet.

Unsurprisingly most of the tales are of male relationships, yearning and loss. To call the Greeks patriarchal is being kind--chauvinistic and misogynistic is more accurate. Even so, Sapphic relationships have a decent showing and there is the occasional Butch/Dyke or Gender Fluid Tale that defies category. They were perhaps most startling and remarkable of all. This is a welcome and beautifully presented effort.

The book was delivered totally bungled and damaged. Because it's from the UK, it feels prohibitive to try to mail it back for a replacement. But the book is damaged.

This book is simply a collection of simplistic thumb-nail rehashes of extremely well-known gays (gods and mortals both) in the ancient world. The pseudo-wistful illustrations don't help. Any of this is easily available on the net, often told better. I'm sorry I bought the book, and don't recommend it to anybody else.
