J.R.R. Tolkien, creator of the languages and history of Middle-earth as recorded in The Hobbit, The Lord of the Rings and The Silmarillion, was one of the most prolific letter-writers of this century. Over the years he wrote a mass of letters – to his publishers, to members of his family, to friends, and to 'fans' of his books – which often reveal the inner workings of his mind, and which record the history of composition of his works and his reaction to subsequent events.

A selection from Tolkien's correspondence, collected and edited by Tolkien's official biographer, Humphrey Carpenter, and assisted by Christopher Tolkien, was published in 1981. It presented, in Tolkien's own words, a highly detailed portrait of the man in his many aspects: storyteller, scholar, Catholic, parent, friend, and observer of the world around him.

In this revised and expanded edition of The Letters of J.R.R. Tolkien, it has been possible to go back to the editors’ original typescripts and notes, restoring more than 150 letters that were excised purely to achieve what was then deemed a ‘publishable length’, and present the book as originally intended.

Enthusiasts for his writings will find much that is new, for the letters not only include fresh information about Middle-earth, such as Tolkien’s own plot summary of the entirety of The Lord of the Rings and a vision for publishing his ‘Tales of the Three Ages’, but also many insights into the man and his world. J.R.R.Tolkien (1892-1973) was a distinguished academic, though he is best known for writing The Hobbit, The Lord of the Rings and The Silmarillion, plus other stories and essays. His books have been translated into over 80 languages and have sold many millions of copies worldwide.



Humphrey Carpenter was born in Oxford in 1946 and has spent most of his life in that city. He read English Language and Literature at Keble College, Oxford, and met Professor J.R.R. Tolkien on a number of occasions. For some years he worked for the BBC as a radio producer and broadcaster and has won acclaim as a top biographer, including the recent and controversial biography of Robert Runcie.



Christopher Tolkien was born on 21 November 1924. During the Second World War he served in the Royal Air Force, later returning to Oxford University to become a Fellow and Tutor. He devoted himself after his father’s death in 1973 to the editing of his unpublished writings, notably The Silmarillion, Unfinished Tales, the twelve volumes of The History of Middle-earth, The Children of Húrin, Beren and Lúthien and The Fall of Gondolin. He died in 2020 at the age of 95.

When the original edition came out in 1981, I read it eagerly but hadn’t re-read the entire collection since. That first edition has been a standard book for understanding Tolkien the writer and Tolkien the person for several decades. But in 1981 the publishers made Carpenter and Christopher Tolkien cut back the planned text by 50,000 words to what the publishers considered a “publishable length.”

This new edition returns to what was intended by the editors back then, with the modern knowledge that there are now many readers who will buy an even longer book of Tolkien’s writing. These letters, arranged by date, are a delightful treasure for anyone who wants to know more about Tolkien from the inside. As Chris Smith says in the forward to the expanded edition, “*Letters* has become the closest thing we will ever have to J.R.R. Tolkien’s autobiography.” 150 previously deleted letters have been added back in, and another 45 letters have been expanded. Since the original collection has been quoted hundreds of times and referenced by a number for each letter, the current editing team used a clever system, so that the references in older books and articles do not become outdated. For example, if a new letter was inserted between items 121 and 122, it was labeled 121a.

After many times reading Tolkien’s books and critical works about those books, I appreciate these insights into his thinking and life much more than I did those 40 some years ago. If you want to see his thoughts about his deeply held Catholic beliefs, that is here. But we also see his agony, wondering if anyone will ever appreciate *The Lord of the Rings* (“LOTR”), even if someone would publish it. Much more important to him personally was his history of the Elves, that we now know as *The Silmarillion*. By the time the fandom of LOTR had grown worldwide and there was a demand for *The Silmarillion*, the health of Tolkien himself and his wife Edith was too poor to give him a chance of putting it into publishable form. I had misunderstood many years ago that this was due to his love of revising. That was completely untrue – he hated revising; but he was *compelled* to do it by his internal demand for everything to fit together.

Tolkien was pleased that LOTR was so well loved; but he became deeply frustrated by the misunderstandings. One of my favorite letters was #153 to a Catholic bookshop manager, who had complained that Tolkien had “overstepped” the limits of a sub-creator by allowing creations and methods not already used by God. Tolkien wrote several pages of professorial explanations that were basically elaborations on two themes, that I can summarize thusly: 1. “Dude, it’s FICTION. It's an imaginary world, and it’s up to me what happens in it.” 2. “Who are you to put limits on what God might do in other circumstances other than the one we know about?” He finally decided not to send the long version, with a note on the draft, “It seemed to be taking myself too importantly.”

If you want to dig deeply into the world of Middle Earth, and even write papers about it, you must not miss this book. Even if you just love Tolkien’s books and want to know more of his thoughts and explanations, this is a fascinating, intimate read. It is the closest we could ever come to reading his mind.

The original version of The Letters of J.R.R. Tolkien was published in 1981. The letters were selected and edited by Humphrey Carpenter, Tolkien's authorized biographer and an eminent scholar in his own right, assisted by Christopher Tolkien, Tolkien's youngest son and literary executor. That original version ran to 463 pages, including substantial notes and an index, and it quickly became an invaluable resource for scholars seeking to learn more about Tolkien's creative processes as well as for anyone who had read and enjoyed Tolkien's books and wanted to learn more about him and them.

Shortly after the original version was published reports began to circulate among Tolkien scholars and other fans that many of the letters and fragments of other letters had been deleted by Carpenter at the behest of the publishers, who naturally wanted a book that would be both interesting and not so expensive as to keep it from selling well. Now, more than forty years after the original publication, this Revised and Expanded Edition is available. It is 708 pages long, again including even more substantial notes and a more complete index. The letters in the original edition were all numbered consecutively, and many of them have been cited in scholarly publications using their number, so it is fortunate that the editors of this new edition have taken care to preserve those original numbers. When letters or fragments of letters have been added to the text they have been identified by their consecutive number with letters added, i.e. "137e", thus preserving the original citations and allowing scholars to quote from the new letters and cite them appropriately.

Tolkien was one of the great letter writers. The 354 letters begin with a letter to his future wife Edith Bratt in 1914 and end with a letter to his daughter Priscilla four days before his death in 1973. There is a gold mine of wonderful material to be discovered within these letters, letting us learn so much more about Tolkien's writings as well as Tolkien the man himself, a conservative man of his times, deeply religious and devoted to Roman Catholicism, a family man who kept in close contact with his four children and his relatives, and above all a scholarly and brilliant professor and writer. As you read and enjoy the letters in this collection, be sure to refer to the extensive notes at the end, as they expand upon and clarify many points.

This Revised and Expanded edition of Tolkien's letters will become a requisite part of the libraries of all scholars and other lovers of Middle-earth.
