4,0 z 5 gwiazdek Good selection of medium length circular Peak District walks
Opinia napisana w Wielkiej Brytanii dnia 31 maja 2022
Opinia klienta Vine na temat darmowego produktu( Co to jest? )
At a size of 12.5cm x 18cm this is a good, pocket-sized soft-back book of circular walks in the Peak District ranging from 1.3 to 6 miles in length. The walks give a good coverage of the area with some good variety. I have walked at Derwent reservoir several times and the Pike Low walk seems to be a well-chosen half day’s walk in that area. At the start there is a section covering an introduction to the area, information on getting round the area, protecting the countryside, and walking tips and guidance. Each walk is presented in the same basic format, with an introduction, map and a series of numbered route instructions which match up with numbers marked on the map. Standard information is provided on distance, start and finish, likely duration, terrain, and the OS map that covers the route. One or two arty photos with each walk suggest at some of the views you might encounter. The walk maps are in a reasonable level of detail, including contour lines, and do show some footpaths, which makes it easier to navigate through path junctions and, if necessary, allow you to adjust your route. Some toilets, cafes, viewpoints, car parks, pubs etc are marked on the maps which is useful. Although the ‘getting around’ section at the front of the book does talk about bus and train services there is disappointingly little information in each walk on how to get to the start. Some walks start in car parks which suggests that maybe you are expected to drive, but an indication of public transport options would also be useful. Just knowing that there is a bus service from some town to near the start of the walk would be useful. The route instructions are brief but with the map (and possibly an OS map or phone app for backup) they provide a good basis for being able to complete the walks. This is a good selection of walks, but I would have liked to see a few longer, day walks included.

5,0 z 5 gwiazdek Industrial scars just intensify the Peak District's natural beauty...
Opinia napisana w Wielkiej Brytanii dnia 7 maja 2022
Opinia klienta Vine na temat darmowego produktu( Co to jest? )
As the map at the beginning of this Collins' book shows, parts of the diversely picturesque Peak District National Park are close to the great conurbations of Manchester and Sheffield. When I think of walking and rambling in the Peak District, the 1932 Kinder Scout Trespass springs to mind.

Around 400 British Young Communist League members wilfully trespassed, converging on Kinder Scout in three large groups. This arguably resulted in the passage of the National Parks' Legislation in 1949 - a framework for the creation of National Parks and Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty in this country.

I've had another in this series of Park Rangers Favourite Walks books - on Pembrokeshire - and this on the Peak District is as good. It follows the same format - some introductory tips on getting around and walking in general, then a separate section on each of the 20 walks covered. The USP here is that because these are the rangers' favourite walks, you're getting a true insiders' view of the best of our National Parks.

Firstly the walk is summarised. Then there's a a map showing the significant points of the walk, each numbered and corresponding to adjacent numbered text. The book is wonderfully illustrated throughout with loads of photographs of this beautiful area. And the walks featured are suitable for a range of abilities.

The Peak District National Park is especially suitable for a book of this nature with its varied and sometimes spectacular terrain and its long and rich history. It's an area I know well and what gives the scenery extra depth is the continuing clear evidence of recent industrial workings, lead mining and so on which sits alongside the beauty and somehow makes it still more magical. It's all there to explore - and this book could give you a good head start.

5,0 z 5 gwiazdek An excellent guide book covering some short, but classic Peak District hikes
Opinia napisana w Wielkiej Brytanii dnia 28 maja 2022
Opinia klienta Vine na temat darmowego produktu( Co to jest? )
I’ve lived and walked in the Peak District for most of my life (almost 60 years) and have seen a number of short walk guide books over that time, some good and many not so great. With this in mind I was really interested to see how well this book would fair from a local person’s perspective?

The guide book has much to offer, for both seasoned visitors and newbies alike. I have done most of the walks in the book at one time or another and can vouch for the decision to include them in this selection. The walks aren’t particularly long, but some are classics in the true sense of the word and showcase some of the Peak District’s honey-pots.

I liked the style and layout of the book. The descriptions are clear, as are the maps and some of the photos are quite beautiful, showing the views off to the best effect (perhaps too good though as in the real world it’s quite often grey and rainy here!).

No one has written a guide book that ticks all the boxes for everyone, it’s down to many factors depending on your personal needs.
Take this book as a snapshot of what the Peak District has to offer and enjoy it for what it is. I think that it’s a great little guide for both planning a day out and then taking with you on your route to use in conjunction with an Ordnance Survey map or digital mapping. For less than £6 it’s a bargain and I would happily recommend it!

4,0 z 5 gwiazdek Compact guide that will fit in a large pocket; all walks are relatively manageable.
Opinia napisana w Wielkiej Brytanii dnia 14 maja 2022
Opinia klienta Vine na temat darmowego produktu( Co to jest? )
This is a small book, large-pocket sized, so can be taken along on your walks very easily.

It is not perfect bound, which should help the pages stay in better after heavy use. It doesn't stay open/flat, however, and the binding causes a few other issues too. The main map at the start can't be seen that easily because the book doesn't open wide and flat, and is also very simplified so lacks useful detail (see photo).

There are 35 or more photos in the book, 1–2 per walk. This is great to get an idea of what you will see on the way, although a few more, smaller, photos would have been my choice: you'd like to think each walk should have more than one or two good views.

The maps for each walk are clear, and they also clearly mark viewpoint locations, which is really useful to plan your stops.

A negative is the font used: they have chosen an extremely thin typeface and seemingly printed it in grey, which means the contrast is really quite poor. If either in poor light or extremely bright sunshine the text can be quite hard to read. I really do not know why they didn't pick a nice clear black font for the text of a book that will be taken outdoors and read in varying conditions.

The summary of each walk gives the distance and estimated time of each walk, but doesn't not give any idea of difficulty, although none of the walks seem particularly challenging (the back cover says the walks are for "all abilities"). It might have been nice to show the overall elevation encountered and an easy/medium/more challenging designation.

Most walks are 3 or 4 miles (1.5–2.5 hours), with a few of just a mile or two long, taking an hour to cover, and a small number are six miles long, taking up to three hours.

Overall this is a handy guide to some beautiful walks in this area of outstanding natural beauty.

5,0 z 5 gwiazdek Invaluable in planning walking visits in the area
Opinia napisana w Wielkiej Brytanii dnia 14 maja 2022
Opinia klienta Vine na temat darmowego produktu( Co to jest? )
Visiting family recently using the bargain rail fares on offer a journey was taken across part of the Peak District from Sheffield to Manchester. The views were stunning. Having not visited before the journey was used to identify where might be good to plan a walking focused visit. This book is spot on to inform choices and comes just at the right time to plan our next visit.

It is helpful with its information on distance, time, terrain, start / finish points (same) nearest postcode and map reference. There are lots of ‘inspirational’ photographs alongside and background information for the specific route area. The step-by-step instructions for each route are clear and support the double paged map of each route.

To have it called Park Rangers Favourite Walks suggests knowledgeable insights. This is clear on what to expect and I like that they are varying lengths with the shortest being ‘Crowden’ roughly an hour with a length of 1.2 miles. Described as an ‘out and back’ you could turn back at any point and not have to do the full pathway to the viewing point. Here it suggests to look for evidence of badgers in Brockholes Wood which without this book you might well not know about .

This is a great little book (13 x 18 cms) which will fit in some pockets or rucksack. Invaluable in making the most of visits to the area. A real help in planning where to go next - can’t wait to set off.
