Around 400 British Young Communist League members wilfully trespassed, converging on Kinder Scout in three large groups. This arguably resulted in the passage of the National Parks' Legislation in 1949 - a framework for the creation of National Parks and Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty in this country.
I've had another in this series of Park Rangers Favourite Walks books - on Pembrokeshire - and this on the Peak District is as good. It follows the same format - some introductory tips on getting around and walking in general, then a separate section on each of the 20 walks covered. The USP here is that because these are the rangers' favourite walks, you're getting a true insiders' view of the best of our National Parks.
Firstly the walk is summarised. Then there's a a map showing the significant points of the walk, each numbered and corresponding to adjacent numbered text. The book is wonderfully illustrated throughout with loads of photographs of this beautiful area. And the walks featured are suitable for a range of abilities.
The Peak District National Park is especially suitable for a book of this nature with its varied and sometimes spectacular terrain and its long and rich history. It's an area I know well and what gives the scenery extra depth is the continuing clear evidence of recent industrial workings, lead mining and so on which sits alongside the beauty and somehow makes it still more magical. It's all there to explore - and this book could give you a good head start.
The guide book has much to offer, for both seasoned visitors and newbies alike. I have done most of the walks in the book at one time or another and can vouch for the decision to include them in this selection. The walks aren’t particularly long, but some are classics in the true sense of the word and showcase some of the Peak District’s honey-pots.
I liked the style and layout of the book. The descriptions are clear, as are the maps and some of the photos are quite beautiful, showing the views off to the best effect (perhaps too good though as in the real world it’s quite often grey and rainy here!).
No one has written a guide book that ticks all the boxes for everyone, it’s down to many factors depending on your personal needs.
Take this book as a snapshot of what the Peak District has to offer and enjoy it for what it is. I think that it’s a great little guide for both planning a day out and then taking with you on your route to use in conjunction with an Ordnance Survey map or digital mapping. For less than £6 it’s a bargain and I would happily recommend it!

It is not perfect bound, which should help the pages stay in better after heavy use. It doesn't stay open/flat, however, and the binding causes a few other issues too. The main map at the start can't be seen that easily because the book doesn't open wide and flat, and is also very simplified so lacks useful detail (see photo).
There are 35 or more photos in the book, 1–2 per walk. This is great to get an idea of what you will see on the way, although a few more, smaller, photos would have been my choice: you'd like to think each walk should have more than one or two good views.
The maps for each walk are clear, and they also clearly mark viewpoint locations, which is really useful to plan your stops.
A negative is the font used: they have chosen an extremely thin typeface and seemingly printed it in grey, which means the contrast is really quite poor. If either in poor light or extremely bright sunshine the text can be quite hard to read. I really do not know why they didn't pick a nice clear black font for the text of a book that will be taken outdoors and read in varying conditions.
The summary of each walk gives the distance and estimated time of each walk, but doesn't not give any idea of difficulty, although none of the walks seem particularly challenging (the back cover says the walks are for "all abilities"). It might have been nice to show the overall elevation encountered and an easy/medium/more challenging designation.
Most walks are 3 or 4 miles (1.5–2.5 hours), with a few of just a mile or two long, taking an hour to cover, and a small number are six miles long, taking up to three hours.
Overall this is a handy guide to some beautiful walks in this area of outstanding natural beauty.

It is helpful with its information on distance, time, terrain, start / finish points (same) nearest postcode and map reference. There are lots of ‘inspirational’ photographs alongside and background information for the specific route area. The step-by-step instructions for each route are clear and support the double paged map of each route.
To have it called Park Rangers Favourite Walks suggests knowledgeable insights. This is clear on what to expect and I like that they are varying lengths with the shortest being ‘Crowden’ roughly an hour with a length of 1.2 miles. Described as an ‘out and back’ you could turn back at any point and not have to do the full pathway to the viewing point. Here it suggests to look for evidence of badgers in Brockholes Wood which without this book you might well not know about .
This is a great little book (13 x 18 cms) which will fit in some pockets or rucksack. Invaluable in making the most of visits to the area. A real help in planning where to go next - can’t wait to set off.
